Any asbestos experts here?

The neighbours and I have been looking to do something about our soffits which due to the last couple of harsh winters have become pretty grim condition wise with peeling paint hanging off.
Unfortunately apparently the soffits are made up of grey asbestos so obviously scraping the loose paint off and repainting is a no go by all accounts.
The neighbour got some quotes from local companies for cladding and removal but the prices are pretty extortionate especially for removal as they require scaffolding which bumps the price up. Cladding I have no knowledge of either but I assume to attach UPVC cladding you would need to drill thus that becoming an issue?
I rang the Environmental Health at the Council but they were pretty hopeless so was wondering if anyone had any advice i.e. has experience in removal/cladding or has had them done themselves. Don't really want to spend a couple of grand if it's not necessary.

I'm no expert but I have a 70s build house and had similar issue. The problem was that I hadn't realised it was asbestos and the company that did the work left loads of in the front garden. With kids about and the garden being open I had to get rid of it meself.
Damped it all down, bagged it all up, wore old clothes which I dumped later and a mask.
Taped all the bags up and got it down the tip.
I asked the council about it and they said there's so much of it in the air anyway that it's more or less unavoidable. Very cheerful!
With hindsight I would have got someone in but I wanted to get shot asap.

Sod any prep get a good coat of paint on it fast.
The stuff doesn't really deteriorate that's why it was used in the first place, just don't beat it about is all.

Thanks Noah. Just been reading up on it because I was intrigued on whether our surveyor should have noted this. On one site someone suggested to another who has a similar issue that it might not be asbestos but fibre cement??

ever been down in the underground ? yes ? you have been exposed to it, the fact of the matter is its floating about in the air , its pot luck even if you've never been nowhere near it, some floor tiles also contain it old bakelite switches, its fucking everywhere, they even used to use it in some cigarette filters , certain brands, still do, i have to do a refresher course every year, every year the regs get tougher, and they discover more things that are nasties

That does sound like Mesothelioma which is the worst case.
4,500 deaths a year from asbestos. More than on the roads.

A somewhat saddening thread now but on life expectancy - its short
From diagnosis usually within the year
Dad bless him, broke the UK survival record, until a chap who laterly contracted it was on tv as he marched off and bet with Ladbrookes that he would last a certain time frame. He did, collected then passed away, I then found out what it was. Top bloke he was, dad would have liked that approach.

Some people can go that for years and never suffer anything. The dormancy period of an asbestos related illness can be as long as 60 years.
Mesothelioma is the worst, it's fatal in a fairly brief period. Then there's asbestosis which is progressively debilitating and is likely to result in fatality.
There are lesser conditions but you could get away scott free.
If you smoke, the likelihood of the onset is multiplied by 53.
It depends on the extent and length of exposure.
Good luck mate but be optimistic.

No mate not absolutely nailed on at all
I hope not because as kids we used to smash the stuff when fucking about on the clearance houses over Canning Town
Facts are that the experts dont have many, when dad was ill, I spoke to many of the leading specialists in the UK, (who happened at the time to be global experts too), the consensus was that if dad was on a site cutting it, a downstream wind coud carry fibres to a bus queue
So many more people injest it, than develop it, as I said, traumas seem to trigger it but in truth they are unsure. It can lay dormant for 20 years plus mind, Dad's case 30 years
Not a lot of help I know

Is the flaky paint an issue for now as it is obviously close to open windows in the house? As I say totally numpty when it comes to stuff like this.

I run a double glazing company in rainham, we also do soffits, facias and guttering, we tend to overclad, we have our own tower so wouldbt need to price for scaffolding, if your local i will happily pop over to give you a price mate
